Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant medication that can be used either as monotherapy or in combination therapy to manage seizures or for other uses as prescribed by a physician.

What is Ictaz used for?

This medication is used to control certain types of seizures and epilepsy.

 

What do I need to tell my doctor BEFORE I take Ictaz?
  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to this medication, any of its ingredients, or other drugs, foods, or substances. Signs of an allergic reaction may include itching, swelling, hives, breathing difficulties, etc.
  • If you have liver or kidney issues, notify your doctor.
  • Share a complete list of your current medications (prescription, over-the-counter, natural supplements, and vitamins) and any existing health conditions with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure this medication is safe for you.
  • Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of this medication without your doctor’s advice.

 

What are some things I need to know or do while I take Ictaz?
  • Inform all your healthcare providers (including dentist and pharmacist) that you are taking this medication.
  • Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until you know how the medication affects you.
  • Never discontinue this drug suddenly without consulting your doctor, as it may increase the risk of seizures. If discontinuation is necessary, your doctor will taper the dose gradually.
  • Follow through with all blood tests and medical evaluations your doctor recommends.
  • Consult your doctor before taking any other sedating medications.
  • Contact your doctor if your seizure pattern changes after starting this medication.
  • Use caution if you are over 65, as side effects may be more likely.
  • Hormonal contraceptives (such as birth control pills) may be less effective while using this drug; use additional contraceptive methods.
  • If you are pregnant or become pregnant while using this medication, notify your doctor immediately.
  • If you are breastfeeding, discuss the use of this medication with your physician.

 

What are some other side effects of Ictaz?

Like all medicines, oxcarbazepine may cause side effects, although not everyone experiences them. Rare but serious reactions may include:

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:
  • Severe allergic reactions: rash, hives, itching, redness, swelling, blistering or peeling skin (with or without fever), wheezing, chest or throat tightness, difficulty breathing, swallowing or speaking, unusual hoarseness, or swelling of mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Symptoms of low sodium: headache, confusion, memory issues, weakness, seizures, or imbalance.
  • Shortness of breath, rapid weight gain, or swelling in hands and feet.
  • Severe muscle or joint pain or swelling.
  • Blurred vision, speech issues, or memory loss.
  • Trouble walking, eye movement issues, or lack of coordination.
  • Unexpected bruising or bleeding, signs of infection (such as fever, chills, sore throat), or extreme fatigue.

Oxcarbazepine, like other anticonvulsants, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, especially in those with a history of such symptoms. Watch for mood changes, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, or agitation, and contact a doctor immediately if they occur.

Common side effects (usually mild):
  • Headache
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, or weakness
  • Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or appetite loss
  • Tremors
  • Anxiety or irritability
  • Insomnia
  • Altered sense of taste
  • Cold-like symptoms (runny nose, sneezing, sore throat)

 

How is Ictaz best taken?

Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all instructions carefully.

It can be taken with or without food.

Continue using it even if you feel well, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

 

What do I do if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.

If it’s almost time for your next dose (less than 2 hours), skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

Do not take two doses at once.

 

How do I store this drug?

Store at room temperature.

Keep the medication in its original packaging until use.

Store in a dry place, away from bathrooms.

Keep out of reach of children and pets.
